- Role of the committee: The dissertation committee is responsible for overseeing the scientific progress of the student towards the completion of their degree.
- Selection of the committee: The faculty on the thesis committee should be selected for expertise in the thesis area so that they can contribute substantial intellectual insight into the direction of the project.
The thesis committee must be composed minimally of four members, including the thesis advisor, at least two of whom must be Program Faculty.
The thesis committee must be approved, in writing, by the student’s advisor and Track chair by February 1st of the second year, and the first meeting must by held by April 30th of the second year.
If the nature of the project changes substantially during the course of the student’s enrollment, the committee should be reformulated to maintain faculty with the appropriate scientific expertise. The program chair should reevaluate the committee composition at the completion of each meeting.
- Requirements for holding meetings: All committees will meet minimally once a year to evaluate the student’s progress, or more often if deemed necessary by the committee. Students who fail to meet this requirement will automatically be placed on probation and will not be returned to good standing without the written consent of the thesis committee and the program chair. Careful review of the proposed research plan, experimental strategies, experimental progress, quality of the effort and future plans should be undertaken. A written summary of the committee’s findings by the committee chair should be provided to the program chair in a timely manner after the completion of the meeting.
- Requirements for meeting preparation: Student must provide a ~1 page summary of recent progress at least a few days prior to the committee meeting. Students should also bring the committee form to the meeting to be signed by committee members as a formal record of the meeting. Forms are available here or from the Program Assistant.
