UT Southwestern Medical Center’s Clinical Center for the Management of Obesity provides advanced laparoscopic and open gastric bypass surgery to effectively treat obesity and related health complications — such as coronary heart disease, high cholesterol levels, hypertension, Type II diabetes mellitus, degenerative joint disease and obstructive sleep apnea.

Our program for laparoscopic surgery and open gastric bypass surgery is nationally recognized for its effective treatment of obesity:

  • Surgeons at UT Southwestern performed the first Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in Texas in 1999, and in 2001 our Bariatrics Program was the first in the Dallas area approved to perform the Lap Band procedure.

  • UT Southwestern’s specialists have performed approximately 4,000 procedures and have trained more than 100 surgeons from across the U.S. in how to do laparoscopic gastric bypass and adjustable gastric banding.

  • The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery is one of only seven facilities in North America, and the only one in Texas, to be accredited by the American College of Surgeons, as a Level I American College of Surgeons (ACS) Accredited Education Institute.

UT Southwestern’s comprehensive medical resources enable patients to have an initial consultation, testing, follow-up visits and any needed medical procedures all in one location.
